Last month Yaaya had the privilege of watching an episode of Master Class, a new series on Oprah Winfrey’s newly created OWN network. Master Class delves into the lives of inspirational figures, game changers, and some of the most celebrated figures in America, by exploring their challenges, disappointments, learning curves, and success they have experienced in an intimate setting.
The episode we watched was on the life and rise of Condoleezza Rice, which explored her journey to the White House, and her experiences there, by examining her childhood, disappointments, political decisions and her personal views towards her own success. We had never seen Condi, as she is so affectionately called, speak so sincerely and candidly which instantly made us conscious of the fact that we had characterised her political career, as being the only aspect of her being.
During the interview we developed a new found respect for Ms Rice, as we were in awe of the fact that she was born in a time of violent segregation in white supremacist Alabama, yet was raised with the confidence and belief that she could achieve whatever she set her mind to, at a time when black people in America were not considered equal citizens. The interview was peppered with pearls of wisdom, an honest evaluation of her performance of secretary of state, and her personal approach to life which created a sincere and heartfelt interview.
Her position as the former Secretary of State is undoubtedly inspirational to any black woman who has political ambitions, and plans to reach the highest position of Government that her skill and talent can carry her. It also serves as an important example and call to action for European Parliaments, in which there are still too few women and ethnic minorities in Government, by illustrating how support, trust, and the unbiased recognition of talent, can produce exceptional stateswomen.
